Run for Mayor in Serbia

TORONTO — As promotional stunts go, running for political office in Serbia may well work for this documentary.

Canadian actor Rob Stewart, who played beach-bum detective Nick Slaughter on the cheesy 1990s CBS series Tropical Heat, has had his name placed on the ballot to become the mayor of Belgrade by local political activists.

And his unlikely city hall run comes as the Canadian documentary Slaughter Nick for President opens in Belgrade, with the actor, already a political icon in Serbia, on hand to promote the local theatrical release.

The doc follows Stewart on a Serbian visit in 2009, dubbed “Slaughtermania” by that country’s press, as the Canadian actor was considered a national symbol of peace and rebellion during Serbia’s war-torn years under Slobodan Milosevic on the strength of his star turn in Tropical Heat, which aired as Sweating Bullets in the Balkan market.

Directors Liza Vespi and Marc Vespi chose to make Slaughter Nick for President after Stewart was surprised to discover via Facebook in 2006 that he was a sensation in Serbia because Tropical Heat and his Nick Slaughter character offered much-needed escapism to the Serbs at the height of their country’s civil war.
